bits and pieces

hello, i'm heather. i'm an experience designer and I also make things.

FUTURE SELF studies human movement, mirroring interaction in dance, light and sound, while exploring the self, present and future.

It appears to general observation, that revolutions create genius and talents; but those events do no more than bring them forward. There is existing in man, a mass of sense lying in a dormant state, and which, unless something excites it to action, will descend with him, in that condition, to the grave. As it is to the advantage of society that the whole of its faculties should be employed, the construction of government ought to be such as to bring forward, by a quiet and regular operation, all that extent of capacity which never fails to appear in revolutions.

An insightful interview of Daisy Ginsberg:

“What are the issues design faces in this new context of synthetic biology? It’s changing our definition of design. To me, design is about opening up possibilities. Synthetic biology, on the other hand, is very much about problem solving. It’s engineering. Engineers work on a defined problem, reworking the solution, making it better and better until it’s ‘right’. I don’t know if this way of working necessarily maps onto biology, which has its own agenda. Designed life will evolve beyond its design, taking its own direction. Is it a good idea to put human designed biology into the environment? I’m not sure. Yet there are mosquitos in South America, which have been genetically engineered so their progeny will never live long enough to spread diseases. It’s completely legal but how do you evaluate if it’s the right thing to do? The complexity is enormous because biology doesn’t understand national borders and intellectual property boundaries.”

Connecting (Full Film)

A short documentary exploring of the future of Interaction Design and User Experience from some of the industry’s thought leaders. As the role of software is catapulting forward, Interaction Design is seen to be not only increasing in importance dramatically, but also expected to play a leading role in shaping the coming “Internet of things.” Ultimately, when the digital and physical worlds become one, humans along with technology are potentially on the path to becoming a “super organism” capable of influencing and enabling a broad spectrum of new behaviors in the world.
